Social Concerns

The Social Concerns Standing Committee guides and coordinates the activities of the subcommittees. Several years ago, the committee developed “anchors” to guide and establish their work:

1.      Anchoring Social Ministry, prayer and workshop

2.      Sharing the message: preaching and education

3.      Supporting family work, and citizenship

4.      Serving :the least of these” outreach and charity

5.      Advocating for Justice through legislative action

6.      Creating community: organizing for justice

7.      Building solidarity: beyond Parish boundaries

Be on the look-out for a retreat in the spring as we re-examine and update our mission and vision.

The following are the sub-committees that fall within Social Concerns. Please visit their sites as they each have many different ways to become involved within the Parish.

Caring and Sharing Is Our Bag, Creation Care, Christmas Giving Tree, Food Pantry, Love Your Neighbor Fund, Social Justice

  • Creation Care

In the summer of 2015 Pope Francis released the encyclical letter Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home. Appearing just before a major United Nations conference (one that resulted in the Paris Climate Accord), Laudato Si’ was a call to action on the world-wide crisis of social and environmental degradation.

The Creation Care Committee, or CCC, was formed in response to that call. CCC activities include a food pantry garden, an expanded recycling effort and educational programs. We also participate in Stations of the Cross and sponsor an Earth Day picnic.

In 2022 our parish joined the Laudato Si’ Action Platform (laudatosiactionplatform.org.) As a member we’re required to produce an annual action plan describing our efforts to achieve the Laudato Si’ goals.

The CCC meets on the first Monday of the month at 7 pm via Zoom. To get involved or for more information contact CCC chair Kevin Bean at 505-234-5632 or kevinbean06@comcast.net.

  • Social Justice

The Social Justice Committee sponsors Parish-wide education on justice issues such as homelessness, immigrant needs and community outreach based in Catholic Social Justice teachings.  They sponsor various activities throughout the year.  Most recently, we sponsored the Sewing with a Purpose Party to make sanitary pads for girls in Malawi, Africa who have to miss school due to that need.  Parishioners came out and cut patterns, assembled and started sewing almost 300 pads that we shipped to Malwai Matters, Inc for distribution.

  • Good Shepherd

Casserole Program for the Good Shepherd Center is done 3 times a year. Each volunteer takes a pan home with recipes. They make one, freeze it, and bring it back to church where the Good Shepherd Center picks them up.

  • Love Your Neighbor Assistance Program

This fund is distributed to individuals who need assistance with their rent and utilities. Trained volunteers evaluate needs and distribute funds according to our policies which include parishioners  and those living within our parish boundaries.

In addition, funds are used for The Giving Tree and donations to local charities.
